Queens Platinum Jubilee Eckford - 2022

Thirty members of the community were treated to an afternoon of nostalgia in Eckford Village Hall on 1st June 2022 to celebrate 70 years of the Queen's Reign. It was funded by the Scottish Borders Council Jubilee fund and deemed a great success by those present.

Villagers (Dot Elliot, Tina Styan, Carol Hanson and Carol Wilson-Green) created a terrific display. Dot Elliot was pivotal in the organisation of the event despite not being able to attend personally. Tina Styan printed the headings and notices, and looked after everything until they set up on the day. Carol Wilson-Green and Carol Hanson provided much needed input, help and support for the display.

Donated artefacts included, mugs, cups, seventy year old scrapbooks, a crown decorated cushion, teapot cosy, plus photos e.g. the Queen opening The Borders Railway. Paperwork depicting the places and circumstances where members of the community had crossed paths with the Queen included personal letters from Her Majesty. Alongside these were items such as a 1969 Royal regimental parade programme and details of visits to Holyrood or Buckingham Palace for garden parties, an invitation for lunch with Her Majesty and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle and the loan of an actual MBE medal awarded to a member of the village with photos and a video of the investiture to add yet another dimension to the event. Altogether an amazing collection of deeply personal mementos.

Arrangements for decorating the hall and ordering the food, which was excellent too, was down to the capable hands of more villagers, Loraine and Alistair Kay, Elaine and Douglas Scowen and Carol and Richard Howes. Colin Mooney was declared the Eckford MasterChef of the day for making a deliciously large Coronation Trifle to be shared as well as being DJ of the day for arranging 1950s music to set feet tapping and hearts pumping.

Charlie Robertson gave a deeply moving tribute to the Queen.

The winner of the Platinum Jubilee Quiz was awarded a book commemorating the Queen’s seventy year reign.

Following the event Loraine Kay said “Everyone enjoyed themselves enormously at this very sociable afternoon. We received many compliments for the content and organisation making it a day to remember for many reasons.”
